Getting over the New Home Blues

A new home is a curious thing. While it can represent excitement, opportunity, and a fresh change to your life, it is also extremely unfamiliar. Even if you fell in love with it, at first sight, it can take some time to acclimate to it. It’s a very unsettling feeling, so it’s a good idea to get rid of it as soon as possible. Here, we’re going to look at some tips for getting over the new home blues.

Visit the area ahead of time

Knowing where you’re going and being familiar with the area and even your neighbors can be a huge help. Saying hello and introducing yourself while inspecting the home before the move can help. The internet is also a great aid, with sites that can show you local activities and things to see so you can make a plan to get better acquainted with the new area.

Try to de-stress the moving day

The stress of the moving day can very much carry over into how you first experience the new home. It’s always going to be stressful, but you can at least manage it by planning ahead of time as much as possible. Make sure you get the movers scheduled as soon as possible, to avoid finding them all unavailable. Pack a little bit day-by-day so that you’re not in a rush to pack and clean all at once on the last day.

Remember to bring a first night bag with you to the new home. If you don’t have the time to unpack, you should at least have some essentials (and maybe a bottle of champagne) to help you through the night.

Host a housewarming party

Familiarity can help you find the fondness for your new home but building new memories there can help it come all the quicker. A housewarming party is more than just an opportunity to have some fun. Having your friends and family around, socializing with the new neighbors, and making a happy occasion of the new home can help you get rid of the uncertainty or unfamiliarity that might be lingering there. Plus, you will be getting tons of compliments to the house, which can help assure you about your choice.

Make it your own

If you do have the time, it’s wise to start unpacking as soon as possible. The sooner you start seeing your own style and your own furniture in the home, the sooner it starts to feel like it’s really yours. If you don’t have them, it might be time to start adding a few deeply personal touches, too. A photo wall of your family, friends, and some of your favorite moments can give you something that’s instantly heartwarming as soon as you set eyes on it.

New home blues are a very real emotional response to what is quite a big moment in anyone’s life. If they’re left to settle, they can leave a lasting disconnect between you and your surroundings. Make sure you deal with them as soon as possible.
