10 DIY Cleaning Products–You Already Have the Ingredients On Hand

Did you know you can make your own cleaning products from ordinary pantry items? Instead of running to the store every time you need to clean your home, mix up a few of these do-it-yourself solutions. Of course, you’ll save time and money. Better yet, you’ll be doing your home and the environment a favor by only using natural ingredients.

  1. All-Purpose Cleaning Spray

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • 1 cup water
  • Rosemary sprig and lemon rind for a fresh scent (optional)

Directions:

Combine in a spray bottle and shake before using.

Use for:

  • Kitchen counters
  • Bathroom counters
  • Sinks
  • Appliances
  1. Heavy-Duty Cleaning Spray

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups water
  • 1 Tbs. ammonia
  • 1 Tbs. dish soap

Directions:

Pour ingredients into a spray bottle and shake to combine. Spray onto surfaces and wipe clean.

Use for:

  • Tough spots on kitchen counters
  • Sinks with dried-on stains
  • Stovetops with baked-on grease
  1. Glass Cleaner

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup rubbing (isopropyl) alcohol
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 Tbs. white vinegar
  • 2 drops essential oil

Directions:

Combine ingredients in a spray bottle and shake to combine. Spray the solution onto surfaces and wipe with a microfiber cloth.

Use for:

  • Windows
  • Mirrors
  • Other glass items in the home
  1. Heavy-Duty Scrubbing Formula

Ingredients:

  • ¼ cup dish soap
  • ¼ cup baking soda
  • 5 drops essential oil
  • 3 drops water

Directions:

Mix ingredients in a bowl. Apply a small amount of formula to a sponge or cloth and scrub. Wipe up the formula with a damp cloth.

Use for:

  • Baked-on grease
  • Stubborn stains on kitchen counters
  • Kitchen and bathroom sinks
  • Bathtub and shower floors

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup white vinegar
  • 1 gallon warm water
  • 3 drops essential oil

Directions:

Combine ingredients in a 2-gallon bucket and use for mopping.

Use for:

  • Sealed hardwood floors
  1. Disinfecting Spray

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup vodka
  • ½ cup white vinegar
  • 1 ½ cups water
  • 10 drops essential oil

Directions:

Combine ingredients in a spray bottle and shake well. Spray surfaces and leave solution on for 10 minutes. Wipe dry with paper towels or a microfiber cloth.

Use for:

  • Kitchen counters
  • Bathroom counters
  • Any hard surface that needs to be germ-free
  1. Toilet Bowl Cleaner

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup baking soda
  • ¼ cup hydrogen peroxide
  • ¼ cup liquid soap
  • ¼ cup white vinegar
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 10 drops essential oil

Directions:

Combine ingredients in a bowl. Stir until thoroughly combined. Use a funnel to pour the solution into a squeeze bottle. Then, squeeze the solution around the toilet rim and leave on for 10 minutes. Scrub with a toilet brush and flush.

Use for:

  • Toilets
  • Bathtub rings
  1. Air Freshener

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 Tbs. baking soda
  • 5 drops essential oil

Directions:

Pour ingredients into a spray bottle and shake. Mist lightly, while shaking often, in any room you want to freshen.

Use for:

  • Kitchen odors
  • Bathroom odors
  • To freshen the entire home
  1. Reusable Cleaning Wipes

Ingredients:

  • Scraps of cloth (old t-shirts work great for this)
  • 1 cup water
  • ¼ cup white vinegar
  • 20-30 drops essential oil

Directions:

Stack the cloths in a container. Combine the other ingredients, mixing well. Pour the solution over the cloths. Put a lid on the container and wait for the solution to soak completely into the fabric. Use them to wipe surfaces. Launder the used cloths and repeat for a fresh batch.

  • Other hard surfaces
  1. Dusting Spray

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup water
  • ¼ cup white vinegar
  • 2 tsp. olive oil
  • 10 drops essential oil

Directions:

Combine ingredients in a spray bottle. Shake well before each use, and spray directly onto items that need to be dusted. Wipe clean with a microfiber cloth.

Use for:

  • Shelves
  • Wood furniture
  • Windowsills

Safety tip: Remember to never combine ammonia with bleach, as this causes toxic fumes. Be sure to check labels before combining any ingredients.
