5 Tips on Preparing for Spring at Your Home

January is here, and although we are still in the throes of winter. Even though the weather is cold, you can still begin to prepare for spring at your home.

Spring is not far around the corner, and it is time to start preparing your home and garden for a new season of life.

Today we will talk about just a few of the things you can do at home this winter to prepare for the new season and get ready for the fun and color spring will bring.

5 Steps to Preparing for Spring at Your Home

Here are five things you can do when the weather breaks.

1 – Clear the flowerbeds

The first job you should consider doing in your garden this winter to get ready for spring is to clear the flowerbeds of dead plants and debris. There will be many plants that died off during winter, and now is the ideal time to get rid of these plants and pour on some fresh compost from your own compost bin to start bringing some essential nutrients back into space. This is an important thing to do before spring begins because it gives the soil chance to settle and will allow you to plant your bulbs ready for bloom.

2 – Check for pests

Before spring comes along and pests in your home start to become active again – it is time to call a local exterminator and get rid of them. In winter, many pests will be slower and more dormant, so this is a great time to deal with the problem and keep your home and garden safe.

3 – Invest in ventilation

Winter might be a time for ultra insulation all over the home. But as the home warms up in spring and summer, we also need some ventilation to keep airflow. Invest now in some ventilation in your home, and when spring comes, you can breathe fresh air, and you won’t have to struggle with things such as bad odors, dampness, and mold.

4 – Buy your bulbs

Bulbs such as tulips and daffodils bloom in the spring and early summer, and this means you should stock up on them now so you can plant them in February through March for them to have enough time to bloom later on in the spring and the summer. This is an important thing to do if you want to bring some color to your flowerbeds year after year, and it will make a huge difference to your garden overall. If you have a smaller space to work with, you can also consider dwarf bulbs such as dwarf irises and dwarf daffodils.

5 – Clean the gutters

Now that springtime is approaching, and we have been through the worst of the fall and winter weather, it is time to think about cleaning the gutters at the side of the house and getting rid of tree debris and dirt built up during the previous seasons. This is an important job to do before the warmer seasons, and it will ensure that your house can divert water away effectively and stay dry.

The Takeaway: It’s Time to Start Planning How to Celebrate the Arrival of Spring in Your Home

These simple home and garden preparations should put you in good stead for spring and get you ready for a warmer season.
