And although there is a lot during these seasons to keep your garden blooming within these months, what you do in autumn plays a critical part in determining what kind of garden you’ll be returning to take care of following the winter months.

7 VITAL GARDENING TIPS FOR AUTUMN

As the autumn leaves roll in and the gradual gusts of wind and rain bring a variation of dirt and debris to your garden, it makes sense to protect your gardens water feature from merging into a swamp. It needn’t be anything fancy. A net carefully placed over the pond and attached to the grass beside it shall effectively prevent leaves falling into your pond.

2 – Service Garden Tools And Equipment

The time of year is approaching where your garden tools, lawnmower, and strimmer need to be sheltered from the elements to prevent them from rusting and breaking. But before you herd them away to the back of your shed, think about giving your tools a mini service first. You can do this by cleaning off any grass and dirt, ensuring they are thoroughly dry and then, of course, sharpening the blades to make sure they are useful when you pull them out next year.

Take care of your gardening tools and equipment, and you shall prevent the need for buying new tools next year. Of all the gardening tips we are sharing, this one will also save you the expense of new tools.

Empty any debris and unfertilized eggs, to prevent them from decomposing in the bird box and causing diseases. Once you have done this, wash the box thoroughly to kill any germs and leave it in the sun to dry. Following this, your bird box should be ready for a new bird to use as their new home.

4 – Prep Your Lawn

There are a couple of things you can do for a spritely green lawn. You can scarify the grass (you can do this in Spring or Autumn) while the soil is still on the warm side, to remove thatch. This shall allow more oxygen to reach the ground and thread throughout the grass. Initially, the lawn may look a bit patchy and scary, but long term it shall do your yard a lot of good. Equally aerating the lawn will prevent the soil beneath the grass becoming too compact. Also, use Lawn food to give your garden a fighting chance of withstanding the winter elements, and to improve the possibility of your lawn thriving springtime next year. And of course, amongst all of this, make sure you remove weeds that sap water and nutrients from healthy grass.

5 – Look After Your Garden Borders

For this step, you will first need to remove weeds, and leaves from the borders. Along with any rubbish that may have gathered there to. Then, turn over the soil to prevent it from becoming to compact and remove in any annual perennials. If you’re keen to fill your border with some interest over the colder months look at hardy evergreen plants that survive the winter, and can add structure to your garden. Such as Viburnum Tinus, Buxus, or holly. To insulate and improve the soil, add compost to the surface around your shrubs and plants. You could also think ahead and plant some bulbs such as hyacinths and daffodils now in preparation for next spring/summer

6 – Rake Autumn Leaves

Autumn leaves can look quite picturesque draped across your lawn and can also act as a mulch to keep your garden healthy. However, too many leaves can smother the turf and soil. But this doesn’t mean you should chuck your Autumn leaves in the bin either! Autumn leaves act as a great home to minibeasts. So as an alternative you could support the environment, and pile up the leaves just underneath the shrubs to provide some habitats for creepy crawlies throughout the winter.

7 – Garden Repairs

It’s essential to take care of any repairs that need fixing in the garden in Autumn at the latest. This means making sure there is no mold in the shed or leaks in the shed roof. That fencing is intact, and the greenhouse glass panes are free from cracks. Taking care of problems like this will prevent any garden nightmares and costly issues that you may find when it’s too late next spring!
