Protect Your Home in All Weather

Do you worry about how to protect your home in all weather? Here in the Carolinas, it feels like one storm season ended, but it brought us more blustery weather. And now we’re now heading into hurricane season.

Of course, you want to make sure that your home is as it should be. So you will need to know how to keep it protected at all times. Protecting your own home is the kind of thing which can take a lot of effort, and you will probably find that you are going to have to practice at it before you can really do it right.

One of the major ways in which you need to make sure you are protecting your home is by keeping it safe from different kinds of weather.

The weather, of all kinds, can have an adverse effect on your home. And you need to make sure that you are aware of that if you are to protect it properly. In this article, we will look at some of the things you can do to ensure that you are protecting your home from all weather events in the future.

Get Insured

One of the most important things that you need to focus on here is that you are properly insured. Having home insurance will mean that you don’t need to worry quite so much about what happens. And, at the very least, you know that you will be protected financially.

That is absolutely something which you will be glad for. So make sure that you go and find some insurance that is likely to serve you well. You might want to look into two kinds of insurance in particular: home and contents. That way, the building itself and your possessions are all protected, which is the best kind of insurance you can have in such circumstances.

When you are shopping for insurance, make sure to shop around and not just settle for one that you first find. You want to make sure you are protected every potential risk. But, you want  to ensure that your premium is as low as possible. That way, you won’t need to worry about your home not being protected, and that in itself can be a huge weight off your mind.

Protect The Pipes

Burst pipes are a leading cause of water damage.

One of the most damaging kinds of weather is cold weather, and you might find that there is a lot you need to do in order to keep your home protected from cold weather in particular.

One of the major things that you might want to consider on this front is making sure that you protect your pipes. In cold weather, pipes can easily freeze and then burst when they thaw again. And that event can result in a huge amount of leakage which can seriously damage your home. The resulting moisture can become an optimal breeding site for mildew, mold, and pests.

At the very least, it will be something of a nuisance. But at the worst, it might be a lot of expensive damage which is hard to fix. So make sure that you protect your pipes from the cold weather by draining water from outdoor faucets to keep them from freezing, and insulating indoor pipes as well as you can.

You should also think about ensuring that you have the heating come on at least briefly once or twice a day when you are not there. That will make sure that the pipes are getting some heat through them at least. That will make a huge difference, and ensure that your pipes are much better protected.

Extreme Wind

Another kind of weather which can cause a huge set of problems is extreme wind. If you have a lot of wind in your area, then you will absolutely need to make sure that you are doing all you can to protect your home from it.

It is likely in such places that your building is built with this in mind, but whether or not that is the case, there is probably always more that you can do too in order to keep it even safer in future. One such solution might be to ensure that you have extra strong windows and that you keep them closed when the wind gets up.

You might also want to think about calling a siding company and having siding installed which can withstand a lot of wind. That can really help, and often that is enough to ensure that you are really keeping your home safe from wind.

That is absolutely something that you will want to think about if you happen to live in an especially windy area.

Storm Shutters

For homes in places that get a lot of storms, there might be even further steps that you are going to have to take. You might need to think about installing some storm shutters, for instance, so that you can hope to keep your windows and doors safe from that particularly extreme weather. This adds security and personal safety, protecting you from shattered glass.

Having storm shutters will mean that you can feel a lot safer, despite windspeed and driving rain or hail. And you’ll fell less worried about the likelihood of there being a storm. Feeling safe in your own home is a hugely important thing. And storm shutters are bound to make that a lot more likely to happen for you.

Make sure you are considering this if you think that it is likely or even just possible in your part of the world.

The Fireplace

If you have a fireplace, then you are obviously always going to be keen to light it up in winter. There are few joys greater than being able to do just that. But before you do so, you will want to make sure that your fireplace and chimney are free of any debris which might have blown into it.

That might have occurred as a result of some heavy winds, or it could have just happened regardless. Thus, you should make sure that you are not going to suffer too much with this problem. Making sure it is clear is essential. Because if it is not, then you will find that lighting a fire might even be dangerous. In fact, it might set on fire whatever is in the chimney.

That can be a very dangerous situation to be in indeed, and it is something you will want to avoid. Make sure you get a professional in to clean it out once a year.
