They Call it Puppy Love…

As the song goes, they do call it puppy love. If you don’t love puppies, then what type of person are you!? If they aren’t just the biggest bundles of joy, then we really don’t know what else you could call them. They’re just the happiest little things in the world, and owning one is one of the best things you can do. If you can, try and get a rescue puppy rather than one from a breeder. You’re getting one for a better cause then!

But, whatever way you do get a puppy, you’re in for a treat. They’re at their absolute most cutest when they’re a puppy, and it is during the first few months that you build the best bond. But, before you do get a puppy, or even if you’ve just had one, there are a few things you need to know. They do call it puppy love, but it takes them a long time to get settled, and there will be a few things that might get in the way!

Puppies are great companions.

Teething Issues

Teething issues can happen in many different ways. It can be taken literally, as their teeth grow through more and more they just love to bite. Some dogs will just nibble your arms or legs during play, and some will take it too far. Some go into their older years actually destroying homes because they chew everything.

If you think your puppy is going to go the way of lifelong chewing, you should definitely take them to a dog behavior therapist while they’re young to get the issue sorted. It can also be taken in the way that they have teething issues getting used to your home environment. They can be highly nervous, and extremely whiny.

We would recommend spending as much time with them as possible, especially during the first week or two. They will learn to be comforted by you, and it will help to form that super close relationship that you will have!

Little Health Issues

Just because they’re puppies, it doesn’t mean they’re going to be as fit as a fiddle. Some puppies are born with health defects that you will have been told about, and some can contract conditions or illnesses in the first few months. Don’t panic though. There are plenty of dog medications that can treat a wide range of issues that a puppy might have. It’s just better to get things under control whilst they are young and more able to respond to treatment. Make sure that they’re also kept up to date with their vaccinations during the beginning so they can live a healthy life.

Typical Puppy Behavior

You’re also going to have to deal with the typical puppy behavior that nobody can really avoid.

For one, they’re going to run around and they just don’t know where to do their business. Cleaning it up is going to become a daily routine until they’re trained. Read plenty of puppy training articles such as this one, and make sure you break the habit early.

You also need to make sure you’re getting them some socialization from a young age. The last thing you want is for them to have a dog to human aggression because you neglect the socialization in the beginning.
