How to Create Space in a Small Garden

Things can often be difficult when we have a small garden to work with. Especially when it comes to imagining doing much with the area. When you don’t have a lot of space, you might think you have to simply live with your garden and cope with only having a lawn and some patio to work with.

However, there are ways to give the illusion of space in a small garden. Additionally, you can still enjoy a lovely outdoor space for yourself and your family this summer.

Although we share images of flowers in this article, the same basic rules apply whether you plant herbs, vegetables, fruits, or flowers.

1 – Think of the view of your small garden

A lot of the time, the only way you will see your garden is through the kitchen window. That is, unless it is warm and sunny outside. Otherwise, your regular view out of the window will be the only piece of garden you can enjoy. You will, therefore, want to take a look at the space from the inside of the house. Then see whether you can move things around to give an illusion of a more extensive spot from the inside. Make sure that your view is unhindered by large plants and that you can get plenty of light and color into the frame.

2 – Create simple, eye-pleasing geometric lines

When you are thinking of changing your garden, the best thing you can do is keep it simple. You can use geometric shapes. For example, squares and triangles lay out your lawn, patio, and flowerbeds. This way, you will create a more organized-looking space. This can be a huge help for you when it comes to creating a feeling of space and light in the garden. You can look to Japanese style gardens in particular for inspiration on these looks because this is where you will genuinely see small spaces come to life.

3 – Mix materials in your small garden (but only three!)

If you want to add a little bit of variety to a smaller garden space you can work with a few different materials. This will make the garden space feel like it is more expensive than it really is. For example, you could have a wooden deck, some small pebbles in the ground, and a stone path which will give a feeling of nature and make the garden feel much better than it is. When you mix materials like this, you must ensure that you only use a maximum of three. Any more than this can confuse the landscape.

4 – Use a simple color scheme

The same rule applies to your color scheme in the landscape; you should always aim to put only three colors in the area. For example, you can look online at color schemes and choose three contrasting or complementary colors and use these throughout your garden with flowers, plant pots, and accessories to make a more designed and styled look. A great color combination throughout the year is red, blue, and yellow.

Editorial note: If you grow fruit or vegetables, please grow as you please. You can waive this guideline.

5 – Consider the sunlight your small garden will receive

When it comes to giving an illusion of grandeur to your small garden, you need to ensure you get enough light into your small space. If you have a large tree blocking all of the light into the area, you might think about tree removal as a way to bring the area back to life and make it feel much brighter and welcoming all year long. If tree removal isn’t an option, select shade-tolerant plants instead.
